7+1 tips for an autumn holiday at Lake Balaton

Chill at Lake Balaton in spring, autumn

We have collected some tips for you on what you can experience in autumn that is not available at any other time of year:

  1. Swimming in the autumn mist in Lake Hévíz. Hévíz Thermal Lake is a curiosity in itself, swimming in the natural healing lake among the water lilies is exhilarating at any time of the year, but the autumn mist is the most magical of all.
  2. On cooler days, you can warm up in the hot springs of one of the thermal baths or in the sauna.
  3. Hike, go on excursions or go cycling and enjoy the enchanting colours, lights and sounds of autumn. A wonderful place to visit is one of the lookout towers in the Keszthely Hills (Festetics, Berzsenyi, Bél Mátyás, Batsányi, Padkő), the witness hills of the Balaton Uplands, the basalt columns, castles (Szigliget, Rezi, Tátika, Sümeg), caves, springs, abandoned mines. We can recommend a new route for each day, with a variety of destinations and fantastic viewpoints.
  4. Pick mushrooms in the increasingly colourful forests around you, even on a guided mushroom collecting tour. There’s nothing tastier than a delicious meal made from mushrooms you’ve collected (and expertly inspected!) yourself.
  5. Enjoy the still-warming rays of the sun on a bench on the shore of Lake Balaton, listen to the gentle lapping – relax, recharge!
  6. Go on a treasure hunt at the regional markets to find seasonal products. Speaking of seasonal products: Look out for local, seasonal delicacies in restaurants. Have you ever tried a wild boar goulash with Zala dödölle? Hungarian cuisine offers a variety of culinary delights at any time of the year, and it is worth visiting different restaurants with different specialities.
  7. Of course, there are also cultural programmes in autumn: in Keszthely, the Barrel Organ Festival and the Dance Panorama promise interesting performances, and the beautiful Festetics Castle is a must-see with its numerous exhibitions and its park in autumn colours (the more than 200-year-old Gingko Biloba tree almost “glows”). Interesting interactive museums (e.g. Balaton Museum, Historical Panopticon, Snail Parliament, Toy Museum), exhibitions and experience centres (Imre Festetics Experience Centre, Tapolca Caves Visitor Centre), smaller and larger manufactories, such as the Herend Porcelain Manufactory, are waiting to be discovered even on a rainy day.

+1 Visit one of the autumn gastronomic events and get to know Hungarian traditions and culture. In Szigliget you can eat and drink well at the Perch Festival, in Tapolca at the Trout Festival, and choose from a selection of unique artisan products. If you fancy a pig feast, we recommend the Vonyarcvashegyi Kolbászoló. On St. Martin’s Day, the new wine is already served with the goose delicacies.

One thing is for sure: you won’t be bored on Lake Balaton in autumn. After the summer hustle and bustle, it is now the perfect destination for a relaxing break, but active holidaymakers can also let off steam here.

We look forward to welcoming you during this magical season! If you fancy an autumn break, contact us and we’ll be happy to send you an offer!
