On the trail of volcanoes

Nature hike, viewing point, witness hills at Lake Balaton

The highest and most famous volcano is Badacsony. It is worth climbing the hill, enjoying the panorama and discovering the Rosenstein, the Ranolder Cross, the Kisfaludy lookout tower, the Bujdosó stairs and the basalt bags and basalt fillings. You can even end the tour with a wine tasting in a wine cellar.

The Szent György Hill, which has a similar shape to Badacsony, also offers many interesting sights: the Polish Chapel calls from afar, you can look down from the top on monumental basalt columns called basalt organs, you can even see an ice cave and the view here is of course the most beautiful thing of all! The 4 km long ‘Basalt Organ’ nature trail is accessible from the road between Tapolca and Raposka.

Csobánc is the third witness hill with a plateau.  On its top you can discover a castle ruin, and if you are lucky, the many colorful paragliders will make the panorama even more interesting.

The Tóti, the Hegyesd, the Gulács, the Szigliget or the half-ruined Haláp Hill will tempt you. 360-degree panoramic views, basalt formations made visible by mining, a nature trail, a sculpture park and much more await you.

You can also drive to Hegyestű, which lies on the edge of the Káli Basin near Zánka. Here, half of the mountain has been eroded by basalt mining, revealing basalt organs, traces of cooled magma. In the geological exhibition you can learn a lot about these once dangerous volcanoes.
