Little Lake Balaton

Nature hike, Little Lake Balaton

Near Fenékpuszta is the bird ringing station. Here not only birds are ringed, but also injured birds are rehabilitated, eggs and nests are collected and a “bird watching trail” has been established.

If you want to explore Kis-Balaton (Little Lake Balaton), you should start at the Kis-Balaton Visitor Center. Here you will find an interactive exhibition, a cinema, a nature trail on the roof and a playground. You can also visit Matula’s cottage or sign up for a canoe tour (both can be booked by email).

Kis-Balaton was once the open water bay of Lake Balaton. Over time it filled with sediments and turned into a lake with swampy mud and reeds. The 14 800 hectare marshy area of Kis-Balaton, which belongs to the Balaton Uplands National Park, is a treasure trove of natural treasures. Kányavár Island is a freely accessible wetland of Kis-Balaton, where you can observe the unique bird life from the lookout tower. The 3 km long educational nature trail Búbos Vöcsök also serves to show this. Don’t miss the Buffalo Reserve in Kápolnapuszta. The buffalo herd here is now only an attraction and a gene bank, but in the early 20th century they were still using the driving power of their ancestors. To complete the day, you should visit the wellness and adventure bath in Zalakaros, which is located in a 16-hectare park. Besides the famous thermal bath, the thermal lake and the eco-park (water treaders, nature trail, playground, slide tower, outdoor fitness park, etc.) offer a great outdoor activity for all ages.
